Who is Noozi?

Noozi develops children's books for children from age 4, who need medical examinations, treatments, surgery or who need to go to the hospital. Noozi books are based upon accurate medical and scientifical information but written in a comprehensive way, as to inform and prepare these children. In the books a certain disease or condition is explained as clear as possible, in a way that also very young kids can understand. These books also mention possible treatments and helps to talk about the impact a disease might have on someone’s life.

No matter how hard reality sometimes can be, Noozi wants to emphasize on the positive, diminish the distance between doctor and patient, and take away fear for the unknown from children and their parents.

Educational materials help to better understand a disease and deal with it more easily. Because there is hardly any accurate medical information available for young children, Noozi will try to make a difference.

As a service for healthcare professionals
with visual support...

Whether children have arrived at the hospital by emergency, or have been in treatment for some time, correct and reliable information is so important. As a healthcare professional you always hope for the best possible healthcare process but in some deseases this is a long-term path where medication compliance and follow-up are very important. In these cases Noozi wants to play a supporting role and contribute to a positive bond between all those who are involved, in which the well-being of children comes first.

Also for parents
Huh? What exactly is wrong with my child?

Maybe you were worried for quite some time and you finally called for that doctor's appointment, or you were referred by your family doctor, or maybe something happened at school or sports school. Or maybe your darling complained about pain or was not feeling very well …

There you are, moving from one examination room to another: a blood sample needs to be taken, a scan, an x-ray, ... and nervously waiting for the results, wondering if you should already inform your family. Until you are called in to hear that your child is seriously ill. You are upset, sad, you don’t understand everything the doctor says. A variety of medical terms are being cited but you don’t have any medical background. What exactly is wrong with my child?

When your child has to deal with a serious diagnosis, as a parent you would like to know more, don’t you?

Everything you need to know at first, you can find in the Noozi books. And later on, when you and your kid are back in the room, or at home, you have all the time to read everything about it more quietly…

We wish you lots of fun during reading but most of all we hope you get well very soon! Good luck!

movie:

Robbie had a lot of health problems in his early years. He was born with a severe heart defect and needed several surgeries. At the age of 6, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. We were devastated. As a mum, I had to handle a lot. How could I explain this to my child? What could I tell without frightening him? What did I actually know about the disease myself and was all the information I was told true? Was it curable? How long would the treatment last? What would be the consequences? How could I involve him as much as possible in the decisions that had to be made? A lot of questions, but luckily there were the doctors, the nurses and 'Chemo-Kasper'.

Chemo-Kasper

'Look, I made a drawing of you. Imagine your body as a small house. Around you is skin - just like the walls of a house. Behind your skin are rooms and corridors - just like in a house. The walls of a house are made of stones and your skin is made of cells. Everything in your body consists of cells ... ' from Chemo-Kasper and his hunt for the bad cancer cells.

In the year that Robbie received his cancer treatment, in 2006, sleeping and reading were his favorite activities. Robbie got totally charmed by the cell-story which was enhanced with funny and expressive drawings. This was a book about him! About his life and about what he was going through at that moment. We read Chemo-Kasper endlessly.

Fortunately all of his treatments went well and after more than a year he could catch on school again. Always accompanied by Chemo-Kasper :-). Also for me, things got better. I could focus again on my job as a graphic designer and enjoy fun things again. Through my partner, who was working at a pharmaceutical company, I sometimes heard about projects that were being developed to better support patients. And because I had always dreamed of creating children's books, I started thinking about medical based books for children more and more. I wanted to write about cells and molecules and draw hormones, enzymes, transmitters and receptors, but for the little ones. As in Chemo-Kasper. I wanted to translate difficult medical themes into kids-language, but with a lot of optimism and cheerfulness. To realize my idea, I would look for partners who would like to invest in patient support and spread the books across multiple hospitals. With the earnings I would develop new books. That is how Noozi started in 2011.

Today you can find me between the starters of Corda Incubator. Corda Incubator is an open workspace where I was warmly welcomed and where it is very nice to work. I can only confirm that they call themselves the beating heart on the Corda Campus. Since September 2017 I rent a flex desk at this inspiring location. I now no longer write and draw from home, but between a lot of enthusiasts who try to build a better future. Super motivating!
